tv   Lou Dobbs Tonight  FOX Business  September 19, 2012 10:00pm-11:00pm EDT

10:00 pm
two dozen countries across the middle east violently protesting american policy. americans say they feel less financially secure for years into what was supposed to be an economic recovery. it's time to leave the bubble and stopped campaigning. that's it for "the willis report." thank you for joining us from have a great night. lou: good evening, everybody. i am lou dobbs and this is the obama campaign's newest political ad. pushing messages that seem to contradict the obama philosophy and agenda. >> i am not looking for a handout. i don't think anybody is ever looking for a handout. i think that we all want chances and opportunities. >> if you try to separate by demographics and classes, you're
10:01 pm
not really president you want here is the president in his own words on the politics of wealth redistribution and class warfare. >> and the trick is figuring out how to restructure government systems that pool resources and facilitate some redistribution. i actually believe in redistribution. i just want to make sure that everybody who is behind this that they have a chance at success too. when you spread the word around, it's good for everybody. i was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth. my wife michelle is was not. but somebody give us a chance. >> if you have a business -- you did not know that. somebody else made that happen. lou: the romney campaign message is direct. president obama is indeed an enthusiastic practitioner of class warfare. earlier today governor romney told his supporters that
10:02 pm
president obama has proven over the past four years that his economic policies won't help anybody from the very top of the very bottom. >> the question of this campaign is not who cares about the poor and the middle class. i do and he does. the question is who can help the poor and the middle class. i can, he can't, he has proven it in four years. lou: governor romney participating in meet the candidates at miami university. tonight, a new fox report shows that support for governor romney among hispanic voters is growing. 30% of latinos surveyed are now romney supporters. 60% support president obama. that is a 17% decline in support from the results of an earlier poll in the support for president obama. it is a 50% increase for
10:03 pm
governor romney. it is a sign that his inclusive message to latinos, like the one he delivered this has been a chamber of commerce is beginning to resonate. >> they see that ours is the party of opportunity. the party that will restore america's prosperity and convinced the republican party is the rightful home of hispanic americans. lou: good news for governor romney in the and the fox news poll. among those described as extremely interested likely voters, the race is effectively a dead heat in key swing states. the romney campaign taking a one-point lead in ohio, tied with the president in florida, down two points, which is within the margin of error in virginia. we will be taking all of that up tonight with wall street legend lew lehrman and we will have breaking details, new evidence and testimony contradicting just about everything that the obama
10:04 pm
administration has been telling the american people about the murder of ambassadors -- ambassador stevens in benghazi and a senior antiterrorism official directly contradicting the obama administration, calling the assault an act of terror. former cia officer and pulitzer prize-winning author judith miller will be joining us to assess these developments. my next guest says that president obama is buying voters by luring people onto entitlements, essentially creating a dependent mass of voters who are gathering in ever greater numbers at the public trough. joining us now is one of the countries most thoughtful and provocative thinkers, cofounder of the discovery institute, george gilder author of the new
10:05 pm
edition of "wealth and poverty." >> great to be here and. lou: the idea that you have written recently, the governor romney and congressman ryan bring a new philosophy to washington. that will charge our political establishment and invigorating invigorate this economy. the idea is not to think about solving problems. >> washington is full of problem solvers. what they do when they solve a problem is create a dependency. they hope to capture a voting bloc. the key is not just poor people or people on food stamps or welfare. it is dangerous and farmers. ethanol production, it is the whole big green machine.
10:06 pm
is this even corrupting the venture capitalists in silicon valley who are a crucial source of american growth and progress. lou: and they always have been. >> 20% of gdp comes from companies that were financed by venture capitalist. more than 60% of our stock market value comes from these companies. to corrupt them is really destructive of. lou: to corrupt them. as you suggest, to lure them -- you mean this rather literally -- to lure the workforce into rather a collective, if you will, dependency that will be supportive of president obama. you mean that literally? >> i really do mean that. whether they calculated or not, the effect of all the vast expansion of government programs is to create more dependence who are inclined to vote for obama.
10:07 pm
in 2008, there was 31 million more voters than there were full-time workers and private sector in the united states. we are creating an environment where it is increasingly difficult. you have to induce people to vote against their interests. their immediate interests and government programs. the lawyers, the whole democratic party is for lawyers who are dependent upon the increase in complexity of regulation and law. lou: we have created quite a class, haven't we? professional cornerstones for a high court of centralized planners and government now. let's talk about this. there are people listening right now saying, this sounds a little bit like governor romney talking
10:08 pm
about 47% that don't pay taxes. and he has been criticized, particularly in the mainstream media for having spoken, while others talk about the truth. what are your thoughts? >> he is right, but he understates it. there are wall street bankers that have been brought up by wall street with special privileges with the treasury and the too big to fail and all of the lawyers deeply depend on the expansion of government and all the educational bureaucrats who beat on the ever expansion of government educational programs. it is a much bigger onslaught of dependency than even the 47% implies. lou: the idea of corporate welfare. it is left out of the equation when we talk about the burdens
10:09 pm
of entitlements. the overwhelming burden of welfare in this budget, which is , along with local and state government, it is in excess of our defense budget for crying out loud. >> i agree. but i also think that these programs are all upside. health care improves the quality and the old-age of senior citizens who can stay in the workforce longer and to fill this -- >> health care should be a positive. it should be in proving the value of the human capital in america. we shouldn't be driving people out of the workforce at age 60 with premature pension commitments that were made when
10:10 pm
people died at six years old. now people live 20 years longer than they did when social security was established. lou: george gilder, it sounds like to me you are recommending that governor romney and congressman ryan live george's philosophy and i suspect governor romney's philosophy that in every challenge there is great opportunity and that's what made this a great nation. george gilder, always good to talk with you, thank you for being here. george gilder, author of the classic "wealth and poverty." comebacks in. >> thank you so much, it's great to be here. lou: wasn't all political leader and collusion between mayor emmanuel and the teachers lutein? the taxpayers are also grateful parents. happy that they are babysitting sessions are back. tonight's "chalk talk" all about the real deal in chicago.
10:11 pm
this booklet dead ahead. congress had to get out of town. lew lehrman is here to talk about congressional and presidential cliff
10:12 pm
10:13 pm
lou: wall street legend lew lehrman will be joining us in moments to tell us what he believes blasting president obama is concerned about his increasing your income.
10:14 pm
the chicago teachers strike has come to an end. are there any winners besides the teachers? that is in tonight's "chalk talk." either way, mayor amendola not like what i have to say. it may well be that the entire state legislature and governor will be a little upset. but so be it. on wall street, stocks ended modestly higher today on signs of improvement in the housing market. the dow jones managed to gain a 13-point lead, the s&p up five. existing home sales are down, 7.8% last month, the highest level in more than two years. construction of new homes up 2.3% last month, also the fastest rate in more than two years. homebuilder stocks up, energy stocks moving lower. dropping as the price of oil fell 3.5% come, just under $92 per barrel. crude inventories surge surging
10:15 pm
the most since march. production rebounding after hurricane isaac. and layoff notices were sent to 11,000 employees. the company expects job losses to be closer to 4400. ford's ceo reiterating this week that he has been so pleased that we could not access 1 dollar of taxpayer money. sure the taxpayers. our next guest says the president obama isn't interested in increasing wealth for raising real incomes of americans. instead, this administration's more important goals are to add government jobs and redistribute income. i am joined by louis lehrman, chairman of the lehrman institute and author of the book
10:16 pm
"the true gold standard." he is talking about moving people in an active incentive to put forward, to move workers out of the private sector, to get them onto the public and create an ever larger class of dependency. you are saying that much the same thing is going on. is that right? >> i am, in a slightly different way than my friend george, we have been together for a long time. president obama has made it clear he is interested in redistributing income. he is interesting and consumption. of course, he has big business and sometimes very big banks. this economy does not have a problem of consumption. nor is it under bank. we have a problem with investment and savings and there has been nothing more to this of those who wish to save and invest for either a college education or retirement from the press and with zero interest rate policy of obama abernathy and administrations.
10:17 pm
lou: so little discussion either in the business media or general media or washington dc about our seniors, those who live on fixed income, what we are doing to this country in terms of creating incentives for savings. i can't for the life of me understand why no one is discussing that issue two that is what i find so perplexing about president obama for a full for years that he has been president. including when he was a senator. never once does he talk about creating jobs and income. it has been starkly true since the industrial revolution that increased income of families of individuals, of those who are planning a retirement or sending children to school has been increasing capital investment per worker, per family. that has been declining since
10:18 pm
1971. lou: it is not a new problem. it is a problem that we can all agree that has been exacerbated to extremes over on unimaginable until four years ago. by this economic crisis. what is it going to take. as i look at the market today, this does not look like a healthy market today if one describes only slightly more robust market is healthy. what are your thoughts? >> it is a problem. the stock market has been hostage to the federal reserve system. wall street come every three months one the market takes a swoon, is begging for injection of newly printed money through the banking system, which of course gives the financial costs
10:19 pm
the advantage of those who are trying to produce real goods and services in the real economy. the money goes to the banks. then it goes to the wall street investment groups. then it goes to all of those major companies who have creditworthy balances. small business on main street. lou: millions of americans desperate for jobs, some of who have been out of jobs for as long as four years. the longest, by way, jobless duration of the great depression were millions of our federal citizens. i have to ask you this. are you confident at all that were governor romney to be elected if he could turn this economy around through leadership and through energy with a republican party. do you believe that there is any chance that he could turn things importantly within a matter of
10:20 pm
six months? >> i am completely confident that president ronnie can change the direction of the economy. i think it is possible that part of the expectation of his becoming president would have a material effect within a few months. he knows it is not consumption or banking. it is manufacturing of new jobs. lou: thank you so much. coming up next, mayor rahm emanuel, is he serious when he says it's a winner for the taxpayers? we are going to examine an exciting detail. the numbers of tonight's "chalk talk." up next, new developments in the investigation into the death of ambassador stevens in libya.
10:21 pm
there is tonight, it appears, no question whatsoever that it was an organized terrorist attack with perhaps al qaeda leadership. national security experts peter brookes, and judith miller coming up next. with the spark cash card from capital one, sven's home security gets the most rewards of any small business credit card! how does this thinwork? oh, i like it! i've been fortunate to win on golf's biggest stages. but when joint pain and stiffness from psoriatic arthritis hit, even the smallest things became difficult. i finally understood what serious joint pain is like. i talked to my rheumatologist and he prescribed enbrel. enbrel can help relieve pain, stiffness, and stop joint damage. because enbrel, etanercept, suppresses your immune system, it may lower your ability to fight infections. serious, sometimes fatal events including infections, tuberculosis, lymphoma, other cancers, and nervous system and blood disorders have occurred. before starting enbrel, your doctor should test you for tuberculosis and discuss whether you've been to a region where certain fungal infections are common. don't start enbrel if you have an infection like the flu.
10:23 pm

[ phil ] get back to the things that matter most. ask your rheumatologist if enbrel is right for you. [ doctor ] enbrel, the number one biolog medicine prescribed by rheumatologists.
10:24 pm
lou: i really think it's kabuki theater. i think the deal has been cut. i think that people in chicago don't know that the results will be that they will pony up, already paying 71 cents on the dollar in a great state for pension and health care for teachers.
10:25 pm
as i said from the very beginning of this strike in chicago, the teachers union had karen lewis and mayor rahm emanuel in collusion. it was fully political theater from the beginning. the losers in this deal are the students and their parents. i want to demonstrate to you just how right i was. well, a little bit. i am so tired of the national media focusing on a story like this and not even reporting the details. i don't ask that they always understand, but least reported the facts. chicago is already facing an estimated 1 billion-dollar deficit. we started off $1 billion by the end of this year, the chicago public schools. $1 billion. the mayor is just telling
10:26 pm
everyone it is a win for our students and the great thing. it is a reform of the chicago schools which are desperately in need of reform. this deal is a joke. it will add another $295 million over the course of this contract. teachers in chicago makes $76,000 per year. and as i said from the very beginning, monday a week ago, it doesn't include pensions and folks, i'm going to give you a number in a minute but i assure you will shock you.
10:27 pm
i'm going to throw in merit pay. merit means seniority it means education level like masters degree and not sort of thing. you get the 4.4%. teachers on average will be getting 1730% will be based that
10:28 pm
will fall in line congratulations, chicago, you built one having the very shortest school years in the country to fall in line with the national average. what is not in line with the national average is the chicago graduation rate. it is 60%. the dropout rate is 40%.
10:29 pm
what is next in the chicago teachers backroom dealing? well, i hate to tell you that it has to be pensions. i told your mother's teacher pensions. $10 billion, that sounds like a lot, right? but they are pulling a billion plus out each year. they may go broke over the course of the next few years. it is paying more than 1 billion here, much more than spring in.
10:30 pm
the state and the federal government, local residents and taxpayers and parents of the students that the payouts. did i mention that they borrow the money for that, too? this is a disaster and calamity. one in 10 teachers attend private schools -- they are sending their kids to private school. what does that tell us about the myths and chicago?
10:31 pm
you have a lot of mayor emmanuel and the chicago teachers union. what a deal. ambassador and three americans murdered in libya, protests continue across the muslim world. the obama administration has misrepresented what happened in benghazi. it is an act of terrorism. judith miller and peter brookes here to discuss a foreign-policy disaster for this president. we have waited a year and a half for the department of justice is in internal investigation of "fast and furious." thousands of guns unaccounted for.
10:32 pm
the report on "fast and furious" is next. in today's, congress will be headed home and they are not coming back to washington until after the election. we have the numbers on this do-nothing congress, and we do mean do nothing [ male announcer ] let's say you need to take care of legal matters. wouldn't it be nice if there was an easier, less-expensive option than using a traditional lawyer? well, legalzoom came up with a better way. we took the best of the old and combined it with modern technology. together you get quality services on your terms,

10:34 pm
10:35 pm
lou: breaking news tonight. bret baier reporting that intelligence sources are convinced that last week's attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi was directly tied to al qaeda. specifically a libyan who was released from guantánamo bay in 2007 who may have led the attack. the terrorist in question was released on the condition that he would remain in jail in libya. he did not. now christopher stevens and three other americans are dead. so far, no response from the white house this evening.
10:36 pm
if this is all true, it would directly, emphatically contradicted statements from obama officials over a week that this was a spontaneous act based on a movie as anti-american protests are raging in the middle east, more than a week after the libyan attack in lebanon, thousands demonstrating today chanting, america, you are god's enemy. shouting anti-american slurs and more our continued to expect tomorrow. meanwhile come a moment today at a hearing of the senate homeland security committee. regarding those attacks on
10:37 pm
consulate in benghazi. >> ambassador stevens and the three other americans died as a result of a terrorist attack? >> certainly on that particular question i would say yes. they were killed in the course of a terrorist attack on our embassy. >> the murders of americans in libya is an act of terror. i am joined now by heritage foundation national security affairs senior fellow peter brookes. peter, good to have you with us. it looks like completely rebukes everything that the obama administration and its top officials have been saying to the american people for more than a week about what transpired in benghazi. >> exactly. and it is also supportive of what libyan the libyan prime
10:38 pm
minister and what he has been saying. at the same time that he was saying that, our ambassador to the united nations is saying no, no, we think that it was protest due to the film. we believe that folks in benghazi, a small number of people came to the embassy were to the consulate to replicate the challenge that was posed in cairo, and as that unfolded, to have been hijacked by some individual extremists who came with heavier weapons, weapons, that as you know, in the wake of the revolution in libya are quite common and accessible.
10:39 pm
and it evolves from there. lou: can you divine in any way by a top ranking official, the obama administration would straightforwardly, emphatically assert statements that are utterly untrue, and they have no founding of being true? >> my senses from the outside is that they are circling the wagons. they were circling the wagons to protect the president obama's national security credentials, which he basing on his counterterrorism operations, including the killing of osama bin laden. i think that they did want it to be a terror attack, even if they had a sense that might be a week ago i said it sounded like a sophisticated terror attack against the benghazi consulate. i think they were trying to protect and not allowed to be called a terrorist attack in
10:40 pm
just a matter of spontaneity and innocuous not well-known film. >> i think also, it should raise questions like why was there not more security, why was this so poorly defended. in administration doesn't want to answer those things are now. lou: the individual, by the way reported earlier on the fox news channel. those associated with al qaeda -- he may well have led this attack. he was released from this and put into custody, police by the qadhafi government in 2008 as a gesture to reconciliation with islamist and we are finding out all of this information and
10:41 pm
certainly the administration must have everything that we are now reading. i am looking at the assessment right here. this makes no sense. you talk about protecting your flank. one of the surest ways is to expose the liars. this is certainly going to be difficult for them as more information comes out based on this breaking news. that catherine herridge shared with us just a few hours ago. this is, you know, we are in the waning days of a very close presidential race. and i imagine that the administration hopes that this would not be investigated to the extent that it should be. we need an investigation, unfortunately, it seems that congress is recessing soon for the elections, and these things will not be looked at quite some time. i think they need to be looked
10:42 pm
at now so that we can ensure that the security of our diplomatic missions overseas and our personnel are protected and what we are up against. we are up against a major al qaeda threat in places like libya and other places in north africa. >> i want to turn to the senator. is it a terrorist attack? he said without any hesitation or provocation, that it was a terrorist attack. what in the world is going on with the government of the united states when you have statements that are made per week. eyewitnesses call it a terrorist attack. an intelligence source called it an attack. we have been hearing that from the very first day. what is going on? >> i guess mr. olson didn't get the memo on what the message
10:43 pm
was. if this man came from that area, the question is do we really want to shut down the facility is president obama has pledged to do. this is an embarrassing issue for them. this man may have come from the is -- islamic group in which qadhafi was leader of the. lou: thank you very much to both of you. up next, the verdict is in. the inspector general's report on "fast and furious." we will have that for you next. coming up tomorrow, "fast and furious" investigator -- one of the leading congress members, trey gowdy and ceo dick grasso, and we are coming right back. stay with

10:54 pm
>> it depends on the debates on whether or not mitt romney can articulate these things. this is a centered vision that i have. barack obama has another government vision. lou: here is the deal. i truly believe, as i said from the beginning, that the candidate who will win this election is the man who can make connection with and talk to convincingly and persuasively about the good of the country and that means the foundation of the country of the middle class and those who aspire to it. this is no longer about abstraction. and i think that it is wasted breath, personally. to talk about debt, deficit and anything but. job creation, economic growth, and what we're doing to this country. >> i think you're absolutely right. i think you have been onto this for years. the sad thing about governor romney is that he has not been able to do that. it now or in the past. the bottom line is if he is going to win and achieve what
